Moving home is a big job with lots to remember. Here is our helpful guide on what to do leading up to completion and once you have the keys to your new home! We also have our Gen H checklist for you to tick off as you go!
Before moving:
Shopping list- Make a list of anything you will need that you don't yet have and will need shortly.
Packing- Try to be as organised as you can while you pack. It will make your life a lot easier on moving day! Labelling boxes will help you and the removal team to make unpacking a much smoother process.
Clearing out- Try and have a declutter to avoid taking things you no longer need with you.
Documents- Keep all of your important documents safe and organised.
Removals- Ask for some quotes and schedule removal services for moving day.
Decoration and repair- Have a think before moving if there is anything you will want to paint or replace before settling in.
Prepare a moving day essentials box- tea, coffee, toilet roll and anything you'll want as soon as you get there. Don't forget a toolbox for any furniture assembling.
Check how the boiler works- we don't want any unexpected issues on moving day!
Check which appliances are going to be included. Check whether the sellers will be leaving the oven and any white goods. You will need to ensure you have these ordered if needed.
Service providers- Have a think about service providers, you may want to change to a new provider to get a better deal. Don't forget to arrange for your internet in advance if you will need this as soon as you move in.
Notice- If you are renting, make sure to give your landlord sufficient notice.
Let friends and family know you're moving. (Most importantly so they can start to buy housewarming presents!)
Once you've got the keys:
Read the metres. Most energy suppliers have helpful guides on how to do this.
Have a good clean before unpacking.
Make your bed as soon as you can- that's the last thing you want when you're tired from unpacking all day.
Bleed your radiators- Depending on the type of radiator, you may need a special key to ensure your radiators are working efficiently.
Take pictures- you'll have something to look back on and remember when you bought your new home.
Checking electric and water supply- Find out where the stopcock for the water supply is and where the fuse box is.
Once you're moved in:
Change the locks- you never know who may still have a key to your new home.
Bin day- Check your local council website to find out when bin collection day is. This may differ from where you lived before.
Post redirection- You can redirect your post from your previous address.
Update your address. It is important to ensure everyone has your new address including your workplace, bank, electoral register etc. Don't forget to amend your address on any shopping sites too, you don't want anyone else receiving your exciting parcels!
Do your first big supermarket shop- Ensure you buy all essentials such as batteries, cleaning products, toilet roll, bin bags etc. You may be in the supermarket a while, but you will come out ready to equip your home with everything you'll need.
Register with your local doctor. Think about any other local services you will require, such as vets for example.
Relocation- if you are moving location, familiarise yourself with the area. Find out where the local hospital, post office and supermarket is.
Direct Debits- make sure you know when your bill payments will be coming out.
Most importantly, enjoy your new home!
